The word Kush is often times misleadingly used when describing high-potency weed, but Kush is so much more than only potent, resinous cannabis. It is a genetic line of cannabis Indica strains, which originated in the Himalayan mountains. It is said that Kush is possibly THE oldest cannabis strain on the planet.

Kush – Origins of the cannabis strain
A picturesque landscape consisting of snow covered mountains and green valleys, sun, blue sky and fresh, crisp air … sounds like an ideal spot, right? That’s what we think too, but admittedly, this is a rather romantic view of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, where the Kush cannabis strain originates from. Truth be told, as inviting and adventurous is it sounds, the Hindu Kush region can be challenging, for humans as well as plants.
The impressive mountains are 600 kilometres long and 240 kilometres wide. The average altitude of the Hindu Kush is 4,500 meters. The whole region covers all or parts of eight countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Due to the various elevations of the Hindu Kush mountains, the climate in the Central Highlands varies with the different altitudes. Summers can be extremely hot and winters long and freezing. This phenomenal part of the world has been known for its cannabis history and hashish production since a very long time. For centuries, the Hindu Kush region has produced the world’s finest hash.
Indica dominates
Most Indica varieties originate from central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Northern India, Tibet or Nepal.
Indica-dominant plants, like the Kush strains, are short and stocky and are known to be covered with huge, shiny trichomes. The heavy, fragrant Indica buds tend to grow in dense clusters around the nodes of the stem and branches, with relatively short internodal gaps between each cluster.
The Indica dominant Kush strains are fast flowering, and usually have a flowering time of 45 to 60 days. In general, Indicas gain height quite rapidly once flowering begins. An Indica may be expected to increase its vegetated height by a factor of 50-100% during its flowering period.
Kush makes superb Hash
As said earlier on, the name Kush originates from the Hindu Kush mountains where the strain has been since around for centuries. The stocky Indica variation Kush has been grown in the mountainous borders between Pakistan and Afghanistan since the 7th century B.C., to be precise. Kush phenotypes have survived within here for 1300 years.
In this region, the favourite method of smoking Kush was not by burning it in flower-form, but by roasting it as hash. The highly resinous and sticky nature of freshly cultivated Kush plants make them an excellent material for hash.
A few of our Kush strains in this category will remind smokers of hand-rubbed Charas hashish (the name that is given to this hash form, which is handmade in India, Pakistan and Nepal).
How is it made? Glad, you asked. After cutting the Kush plants, the sturdy branches of Kush colas are broken apart and the resinous buds are rubbed in one hands for a long period of time. Note, a lot of pure Indicas and Indica dominant strains have desirable hash-making qualities, because of their extensive gland production and sticky, resinous buds. A delicate amount of pressure needs to be used when rolling the Kush branch and colas, which are placed in a bucket or container, in order to collect the tiny particles of cannabis matter that fall off the entire stalk. The tiny weed skimmings that are being manually separated by this rubbing technique are the THC trichomes on the outside of the resin-coated Indica strain. Charas hash has been a cash crop for the local Hindu Kush people for centuries, and Kush weed is a major source of Charas.
